One of my favorites of his, and my favorite Christmas song.

I don't normally cover my favorite songs. I like to do covers of songs that I think I can add something unique to, and for songs like these, they're already so close to perfect that I don't know what more I can do. However, it's Christmas, it's the time for miracles and self-indulgence, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

There's so much wonderful, beautiful, tragic imagery in this song. Like most great songs, when you sing it, it feels like it belongs to you, like it's "your" song. Nick Cave gave a talk about how good love songs need some hate in them and this one so epitomizes that concept, both in theory and in application. I could rant about it forever, there's so much meat to it. But, that doesn't sound like a good use of your time or mine, so I'll leave at this: I love this song, I think it's staggeringly well written, and I truly hope you enjoy my rendition of it.
